Oslo, Norway, December 15 2025 - New data from Keystone Education Group shows growing international interest in Nordic study destinations in 2025, as students increasingly prioritize safety, affordability, and policy stability when choosing where to study.
Search interest in Nordic countries has risen significantly since April, peaking in September when audiences were 33% more likely to search for a Nordic country. While growth has eased slightly since then, interest in November remained 20% higher than April levels, indicating sustained momentum rather than a short-term spike.
Growth has been spread across the region - Norway recorded the strongest increase, despite announcing the introduction of tuition fees for most non-EU international students back in 2023.
"Our ability to combine search trends with search data lets us see this impressive growth but also understand what might be driving it. In a year in which audiences are searching more broadly and potentially turning away from traditional anglophone destinations, regions like the Nordics are well-positioned to benefit through their reputation for academic quality, but also security and stability”, says Dr Mark Bennett, Keystone’s VP of Research & Insight.
“This is the case even when some Nordic destinations, such as Norway, have become more expensive for international students - which goes to show that cost isn't the only factor prospective student audiences consider” - he adds.
Search interest peaked at +88% in August, followed by Denmark (+57%) and Finland (+17%) in September, and Sweden peaking at +27% in October.
International demand for Nordic study is driven primarily by European students (44%), followed by South Asia (15%) and Africa (11%), with variation by destination. Denmark attracts a higher share of European interest, while Finland and Norway receive more diversified demand, including stronger interest from South Asian and African audiences.
Keystone’s unique perception data helps explain the region’s growing appeal. Survey respondents rate the Nordics highly for safety and political stability, outperforming major competitors including the UK, Germany, and the U.S. The region also leads on ease of visa and entry requirements, ranks strongly for culture and lifestyle, and ties with Germany to be perceived as one of the most affordable study options.
When it comes to academic reputation and subject offerings, the Nordics remain competitive, ranking just behind the UK and U.S., reinforcing their position as a high-quality alternative to traditional study destinations.
As global student mobility becomes more fragmented and competitive, Keystone’s data suggests the Nordics are increasingly benefiting from their reputation for stability, accessibility, and academic quality.
